Johnson died with 230 other people on July 17, 1996, in the crash of TWA Flight 800, when shortly after takeoff from John F. Kennedy airport, the plane exploded south of Marches Inlet, Long Island, New York, over the Atlantic Ocean. The plane was travelling from New York to Paris, France. He was 47 years old.
