U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Williams College in 1809, moved to New York State in 1812, graduated from Yale College, studied law, and was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Madison, New York. He was a delegate to the New York State convention to revise the constitution in 1822 and judge of the court of common pleas for Madison County. In 1839, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth Congress, serving until 1841. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law and engaged in literary pursuits until is death.
