William was the oldest son of Godfried Knab and Christina Heckele Knab. He was a farmer which he learned from his father. He married Luella A Thomas 18 June 1900 and had 2 sons, Irving and Wilber. He was only 39 when he died. After his death his wife Luella lived briefly with her brother and later with her son Wilbur until her death in 1935 as a result of a hit and run driver while boarding a street car in Toledo. Her burial is unknown.
