Godfried (Godfrey) Knab grew up in a farming family in La Salle, Monroe, Michigan. He married Christina Heckele in 1877 and had 3 children: William, John and Emanuel. After the death of his newborn son Emanuel, his wife Christina's died 2 weeks later in June of 1886. He then married Christina's sister Caroline Heckele a month later. Together they raised his 2 children, her one child and 5 children of their own. Godfried was a farmer all of his life.
