"NETTIE VICKERS PASSES (12/27/62)

Nettie Vickers of 1502 Third Avenue died Thursday, December 27th in a Huntington hospital after an illness of three weeks. She was born March 7, 1877 at Crown City, Ohio, a daughter of the late John and Barbara Lewis Dillon. At the age of five, she moved to Big Creek of Lincoln County. She married John Bunyan Vickers the 27th of December, 1893 at Snowden, W. Va. Born to this union were Cecil Kyle, Iva Floral, Myrtle Mae, Barbara Maude, Arthur John and Hallie Eugene.

Mrs. Vickers moved to Hamlin in 1912. Here she affiliated with the Central Methodist Chiurch of which she was a member until her death. She was a former teacher in Lincoln and Logan County Schools. She took great pride in once having been the teacher of Jack Dempsey.

Mrs. Vickers moved to Logan in 1916 where she taught and managed a hotel. She went to Huntington in 1922 where she resided until her death except for a few years while teaching in Logan County during World War II. She was always interested in education and attended Marshall University at the age of seventy. She remained quite active and was confined to her home only three weeks before her death which was caused by Pneumonia.

Funeral services were conducted at the Beard Mortuary at Huntington by the Reverends Eugene Brown and Eugene Bowen, last Sunday. Burial was in the Harvey's Creek Cemetery, Lincoln Co.

Pallbearers were D. F. Dunn, V. C. Bell, M. R. VandeLinde, T. G. Hayes, Jr., Robert White and Joe Baker.
Honorary Pallbearers were Grover Thacker, J. D. Smith, Jr., Houston A. Smith, Rome Vickers, Leonard Lando, W. J. Artrip, Rex Davis, Will Elmore, Frank Dial, Billy Erwin, Baxter Laird, Paul Dirton, Jr., and Clyde Honaker.

Mrs. Vickers is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Hoff of Hamlin; Mrs. Iva Hayes of Duncan Falls, Ohio; and Mrs. Barbara Maude Harless of Scottsdale, Arizona. A son who survives is Arthur Vickers of Cleveland, Ohio. There are six grandchildren and ten great - grandchildrn. She was a sister of the late Senator Jacob D. Smith of Hamlin."
