James was the son of James Maxwell and Malinda (Johnson) Maxwell. James was married first to Caroline "Carrie" (Thompson) Maxwell on November 7, 1866 in Buchanan County, Missouri. James and Carrie had three children together including: Edith and Camelia Alice "Amy" Maxwell. James married a second time to Amanda Elizabeth (Malone) Richards Maxwell (1856-1925) on October 10. 1901 in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri. Amanda and James were divorced in 1909 and Amanda went back to using the surname of Richards.
