Henry Clark Maxwell was the son of James and Melinda Maxwell. He grew up in Buchanan County, Missouri and began his farm from 1876 to 1885 in Andrew County. In 1885 due to felling health he, with family in toll traveled to Colorado in May only to return in September to settle in St. Joseph engaged in the cattle business and later bought and shipped horses. He then turned to real estate both city and farm property in Missouri and other states. In 1876 he married Emma Ford the daughter of John and Dixie Ford. The couple had six children: Walter married Nora Cassidy; Nellie first married Fred Prinz and later William Lange; Jesse F married Mary Hooper; Harvey J married Ruth Wheeler; Frank D and Floyd. Emma was born in St. Joseph and died in 1887.
Henry remarried in 1892 to Mattie K Kelly born in New Hampton, Missouri a daughter of John H and Lucretia Kelly; John a native of Virginia and Lucretia a native of Kentucky.
