He joined The Salvation Army, followed by his elder brother, at a time when there was a lot of opposition in the town to The Salvation Army. He played the side drum amd spent many hours practising. He is described as "A rollicking Salvation Army boy, eyes full of fun, a mop of dark brown curls . . . .and a voice like a cathedral choir-boy."There is a story that he was thrown in the harbour in one of the many scuffles and was drowned. There may be some truth in this, but he died at home, in his bed, complaining of his head. This was possibly the result of a blow to the head during another fight. He had a Salvation Army burial service, with the band playing. The stone has the Salvation Army badge on it, but the town authorites wold not allow their motto of 'Blood and Fire,' so instead it has'Victory.'
Information from 'The Old Corps, ' written by his brother.

"Hallelujah"
Grace there is my every debt to pay,
Blood to wash my every sin away,
Power to keep me spotless day by day,
For me, for me.
