From Hardesty, HISTORY OF LAWRENCE AND GALLIA COUNTY, OHIO (1883):

"The father of Thomas W. Rose [i.e., William Rose] was born in Montgomery County, West Virginia, near Christianburg, January 15, 1799. He removed from there to Indiana, where he married Winafred Neal in 1830. She was born in Monroe County, West Virginia, May 1, 1810. After their marriage they went to Gallia County, Ohio; from there they came to Lawrence County, Mason Township, in 1832. By occupation he was a blacksmith and farmer. He died in Mason Township July 20, 1867. His wife still lives in Mason Township. They were both members of the United Brethren Church. The meetings of that denomination were held in Mr. Rose's house for twenty years. He and his sons then united and built a church on Sand Fork Creek, on Mr. Rose's place. He was very active as an educational worker. He never went to school a day in his life. He cleared two farms in Mason township. He brought the first wagon into that township in 1832. He did the first smithing in the township. Hickory was used for clevises and plow-coulters before he opened his shop. His children numbered twenty-one..."

From the records of Rev. Chester Miller:

William made contributions to help build Mt. Plesant Baptist Church on Greasy Ridge but he had a United Brethern Church started and which worshipped for about 20 years in his home. He gave the land on which to build a U.B. Church and helped them to do so.

William Rose was married first to Mary Adkins, daughter of Lewis Adkins and Mary Massie.
William Rose & Mary Adkins had the following children:

Catherine b. 1812, Elizabeth b. 1813, Edward b. 1815, William b. 1817, Mary b. 1817 (twin), Lewis b. 1819, Jesse b. 1821, James Jackson b. 1825, Bethena Jane b. 1827, Charlotta b. 1827 (twins again).

William Rose was married secondly to Winifred Neal, daughter of Walter Neal & Deborah Arnot.

William Rose & Winifred Neal had the follwoing children:
Walter, 1830-1903, Jehu, 1832-1905, Rebecca, 1834 - ??, Thomas William, 1837-1918, John B., 1838-1909, Deborah, 1841-1930, Charles Henry, 1843-1917, Lavisa Jane, 1844-1849, Andrew, 1846-1849, Sarah B., 1849-908, Benjamin Franklin, 1852-1925.


Another record regarding Mary Adkins - first wife of Wm. Rose:
William Rose was married to Mary Adkins, daughter of Lewis Adkins and Catherine, surname unknown. The family came from Monroe County, WV, lived for a while in that part of Kanawha County, WV, which is now Logan County, and then moved to Gallia County, OH, about 1810. That part of Gallia became Jackson County, OH, and Lewis died there in 1819. We know Catherine was alive in 1803, when she signed a deed of sale for land along with Lewis, but have no knowledge of her after that. Even if Lewis had married again, which we have no record of, Catherine would have been Mary's mother. William and Mary were married in Gallia County in 1811 as noted.
