JACOB MILLER MURDERED

Jacob Miller, a German farmer on Dr. Cole's farm south of town was shot by John Achziger Tuesday morning between one and two o'clock and died a few minutes later. As near as we can learn the details John Achziger and his father, who live on the McCreary place a few miles west of Scottsbluff, came to Minatare Monday afternoon from the Henry Reitz place on the hill north of town, and tied their team, north of Taylor's store and when they came to look for them about midnight all they could find was the hitch reins and part of the wagon. Whereupon Jacob Miller, Martin Ziegler and Casper Rieb started out with the latter’s horse and spring wagon to find the missing team. Not finding them at the Reitz home they were returning to town when they met Reitz and the two Achzigers walking east towards the "soddy” north of town possibly going to the Reitz place for the night. The Achzigers accused Jake Miller of turning their team loose and attempted to pull him out of the buggy. Casper Rieb, who was driving, whipped up the horse and attempted to get away from them. It was then that John Achziger drew his gun, a Smith & Wesson 38 caliber rim tire revolver, and shot at Miller, who was kneeling in the back of the buggy and holding to the back of the seat. Ziegler and Rieb brought the wounded man to Dr. Cole as fast as the horse could travel, but he only gasped a couple of times and expired within a moment or two after they got him in the house. Sheriff Aaron and Coroner Medlin were phoned for at once and the sheriff arrived here at three o'clock and soon had the gun man in the county jail. The Coroner came down and looked the case over and impaneled a jury of six men, whose verdict was that he came to his death by a gunshot wound inflicted by John Achziger, and that said shooting was felonious. After the arrival of County Attorney White, about noon, the Coroner, assisted by Dr. Cole, held a postmortem examination, and decided that death was caused by an internal hemorrhage— the bullet having penetrated the abdominal cavity and lacerating the abdominal aorta and the mesenteric artery. Jacob Miller was about 41 years of age and leaves a wife and four fatherless children. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church and interment was made in East Lawn Cemetery today. He was a peaceable, hardworking farmer and respected by all who knew him. There is a strong feeling here among his friends against the man who committed the dastardly deed.
