HARDIN CO. INDEPENDENT - OLD-TIMERS DIED AS YEAR 1951 COMES TO END - BLACKSMITH EQUIPMENT SOLD IN WHAT ONCE WAS NEWSPAPER OFFICE
Two of Hardin Co.'s storekeepers of years ago, died as the year 1951 cloed, & equipment in the blacksmith shop, which had been a newspaper office near Cave-In-Rock more than 40 years ago was sold & removed this week. Both T. J. Belt, aged 90, & John Louis Johnson, 91, died on Saturday, 29Dec.
WAS 90 YEARS OLD -
Thomas Jefferson Belt, who until 10 years ago was one of the leading citizens of Hardin Co., died at 4:00 p.m. Saturday at his home in Harrisburg, at the age of 90 years, he death being due to heart ailment, which had kept him bedfast for the past 8 years.
For the 40 years before his retirement from business, he had conducted a mercantile business at Lambtown, near Cave-In-Rock. Born in Hardin Co., he was a son of Mr. & Mrs. Houston Belt, deceased. HIs first wife, Mrs. Martha Belt, died in 1936. In 1941 he married Mrs. Mamie Behymer, who cared for him during his illness, & who survives him. Other survivors include 1 daughter, Mrs. D. A. Douglas, who lives in her father's former home at Lambtown, 23 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, & 5 great-great-grandchildren.
BURIED AT SMYRNA -
The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg, the officiating clergyman being Rev. R. W. Wallce, pastor of the Baptist church. Later the body was brought to the Smyrna cemetary, near Cave-In-Rock, for burial, a brief service being held at the side of the grave.
Among those who attended the funeral were Mr. & Mrs. Buster Crow & daughter, Pamela, Evansville, Mrs. Corbett Cole & Mrs. Hannah Polares, Detroit, Mr. & Mrs. Weldon Brittain & family, Dearborn, MI, Mrs. Raye C.
