Son of Charles Rufus Brown and Clarissa Locke (Dodge) Brown. Husband of Florence Ivy. Father to Charles, Samuel, and Richard.

Born Oct 15 1885 in Newton, Middlesex, MA per Newton VR's

A quick look at Federal Census records on Ancestry.Com gives us :

1900 - living at 73 Parker St in Newton Mass (very close to Andover Newton Theological Institute) with his parents, his father is working as a professor of theology. Samuel is their only child age 14 born in 1885 in Massachusetts, most likely Newton.

1910 - no good matches, needs further research, could be married to Florence by this time but no children.

1920 - living at 10 Oakland St in Lexington Mass with his wife Florence he is working as a commercial illustrator. His wife Florence is age 33 which means she would have been born about 1887, which does not agree with the date on her stone (1885). Children : Charles R(Rufus) age 3 years 5 months born about Aug 1916 in Mass, Samuel E(Emmons) Jr age 1 year 11 months born about Feb 1918 in Mass.

1930 - living at 450 Main St in Westport CT with his wife he is working as an artist with his own studio. His wife Florence is age 40 which means she would have been born about 1890, which does not agree with the date on her stone (1885). Children : Charles R(Rufus) age 13, Richard age 10, and Samuel Emmons Jr age 7 born about 1923 in Mass.

In the 1930 census data we find that he was married at age 16 giving us 1901 but she was married at age 12 giving us 1897. The data could be wrong or this could be her second marriage.

Note : I found an obituary for their son Charles Rufus Brown (named after his grandfather). He was born 24 July 1916 in Boston Mass and died 4 April 2005 at the Maine Medical Center in Yarmouth Maine. It mentions that he was predeceased by his two brothers (Sam and Dick) as well as his own son Michael and a granddaughter Eleanor. He was married to Muriel Jean Quinn of bath Maine on 24 Oct 1948, who was living at the time of his death. Surviving children : Charles Rufus Brown Jr, Kenneth John Brown, Clarissa Dodge Brown, Susan Alma Brown, and Barbara Jean Brown. The obituary does not mention a cemetery.
