Selmer was the oldest child of Hellick Dokken and Guri (Huus) Dokken. His mother died young so Selmer and a sister dropped out of school to help with the farming and raising younger siblings.
After marrying Alma Johnson on Oct 12, 1921 the couple moved to British Columbia, Canada where they filed a land claim in the Peace River country. Other Scandinavian Lutherans in the area joined to raise a rural Lutheran Church. Selmer and Alma were charter members and Selmer was church caretaker for about 30 years.
