Elizabeth was the daughter of Stephen Bruce and Mary Meyer. In 1827, Elizabeth married Martin Rarrick in Pennsylvania. I found seven children for them, but there may have been others. The children I found were Stephen Jackson (24 Mar 1829 – 17 Aug 1893, m. Sarah Oliver); Catharine (1831 – 1871, m. Samuel Milliser); Daniel (b. ca. 1831 – aft. 1860, m. Nancy Milliser); George W. (2 Apr 1835 – 28 Jan 1918, m. Nancy Cramer); Henry C. (21 Oct 1836 – 24 May 1928, m. Angeline Rans); Harriet (10 Jun 1840 – 25 Oct 1926, m. John Christian Steinhiser); and Hiram M. (1842 – 11 Oct 1906, m. Lydia Ann Kulp).

Children Stephen, Daniel, Catharine and George were born in Pennsylvania, Henry in Ohio in 1836, and Harriet and Hiram in Indiana in 1840 and 1842. The 1850 Census placed the family in Aubbeenaubbee Twp., Fulton Co., Indiana. Martin Rarrick, 47, was a farmer. Elizabeth, 40, was keeping house. Still at home with their parents were Stephen, 21, Daniel 18, George, 16, Henry, 13, Harriet, 10, and Hiram, 9. Also living with the family was farm hand 23-year-old Isaac Fout.

The family was still in Aubbeenaubbee Township a decade later when the 1860 Census was taken. Martin Rarrick, 60, was still actively farming. Elizabeth, 50, was tending to the household. Still at home with mom and dad were Henry, 22, Harriet, 19, and 17-year-old Hiram.

In the spring of the following year, the Civil War erupted. Two of Martin and Elizabeth’s sons would answer the call, both serving in Co. E of the 87th Indiana Infantry. Henry mustered in on 31 Aug 1862, Hiram on 31 Aug 1862. Henry mustered out on 10 Jun 1865, Hiram on 12 Jun 1865. They were some of the lucky ones, able to return home to their families.

By the time the 1870 Census was taken, Martin and Elizabeth’s nest was empty. They were still living in Aubbeenaubbee Township, the nearest post office in Rochester. Martin Rarrick, 69, was still managing the family’s farm, and Elizabeth, 62, was in charge of the household.

A decade later, when the 1880 Census came around, the Rarricks were still in Aubbeenaubbee Township. Martin Rarrick, 77, was enjoying his retirement. Elizabeth, 71, was at his side, their marriage into its fifty-third year. They shared another six years together before death parted them, claiming Martin on 19 Jun 1886, nine days after celebrating his eighty-third birthday. Elizabeth only stayed on this earth for another two years before following him into the light on 18 Jul 1888, aged 79.
