Ruth (Gritton) Honnold, 95, of Pendleton, passed away September 30, 2011 at St. John's Medical Center in Anderson.

She was born July 17, 1916 in Richland Township, Madison County and was a Pendleton resident since 1946.

Ruth was an elementary school teacher for the South Madison School Corporation at Pendleton Elementary from 1951 until her retirement in 1982. She began her teaching career in 1937 at the Burton School in Wesley Chapel, a one room school house containing grades one through eight.

She was a 1933 graduate of Anderson High School and a graduate of Ball State University with a bachelor's degree in 1957 and a master's degree in 1979.

Ruth was a member of the Pendleton Christian Church; Retired Teachers Association; Sigma Phi Gamma Sorority, Pendleton and the Saturday Club. She was a past board member of the Pendleton Community Library and member of its book club. Ruth was the recipient of the Distinguished Hoosier Award from Governor Daniels on her 90th birthday.

The Pendleton Elementary School Library is named the Ruth Honnold Materials Center in her honor.

She loved attending any family event, traveling extensively and was an avid reader. Ruth possessed a great appreciation and love for the arts. In every aspect of her life, Ruth was an educator and role model.

Survivors include her children, Fred V. (Betsy) Honnold, Jr. of Fayetteville, NY, Pat (Chuck) Schirmer of Baltimore, MD, Phillip Honnold of Pensacola, FL, Katie (Clarence) Hupfer of Pendleton, Karen (Arnie) Flannery of Greenfield, and Anna (Don) Reardon of Ponte Vedra, FL; siblings, Eugene Gritton of Muncie and Maxine Conner of Anderson; sisters in law, Ruth Seal of Anderson and Mary Pugsley of Daleville; 20 grandchildren, Todd Reece, Tricia Calkins, Bradley Honnold, Scott Honnold, Jill Gaffigan, David Schirmer, John Schirmer, Kyle Hupfer, Megan McCloskey, Angela Bossnack, Ryan Hupfer, Darin Flannery, Denise Springer, Blake Flannery, Keith Reardon, Kelly Reardon, Robyn Jamerson, Brian Jordan, Jennifer Hull, and Jeffrey Jordan; 40 great grandchildren; a great great grandson; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil Clemont and Addie Lavonne (Noble) Gritton; husband, Fred V. Honnold, Sr.; daughter, Judith Honnold-Reece; siblings, Lloyd Gritton and Deva Adams-Clevenger; and daughter in law, Ellen (House) Honnold.

Burial will follow Grove Lawn Cemetery, Pendleton, Indiana.
