Oldest Resident Buried on Friday. Mrs Josiah Cooper aged 98 Laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery. Came to state in 1855. Settled in Sauk Centre Following close of Civil War - 5 living children.
Mrs. Josiah Cooper, Sauk Centre's oldest resident and probablt the ldest resident of Stearns County passed on Wednesday afternoon, july 3rd. Although she had been ailing for some weeks, her death was not expected and came as a shock to her relatives and friends.
On the 9th of last May, Grandma Cooper celebrated her 98th birthday and received callers all afternoon at her home, surprising everyone with her mental alertness and wonderful memory. A few days later she was again confined to her room, and was apparently making another recovery when a sudden turn for the worse took place and she passed peacefully away. It had been hoped that she would have lived to reach 100 years as she was blessed with a wonderful vitality that carried her through many illnesses but it was not to be and the community mourns its oldest member who passed away at the age of 98 years, one month and 24 days.
Harriet Frederick was born May 9 1831at Harrimans, formerly called Turners, New York State at which place she grew to young womanhood. She was united in marriage to Josiah Cooper of New york City in the year 1848. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Pennsylvania and later to Newburgh NY where they resided for several years.
In 1855 they came to Shakopee Minn where they lived until the close of the Civil war and where MRs Cooper endured the hardships of the early settlers
