U.S. Congressman. Born in Schenectady, New York, he graduated from Union College in 1802, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1805 and commenced to practice law in his own town of Schenectady. During the War of 1812, he served with General Wade Hampton on the northern frontier and was subsequently appointed aide-de-camp to Governor Daniel D. Tompkins. In 1815, he was elected as a Republican to the Fourteenth Congress, serving until 1817. Not seeking re-nomination, he aided in the construction of the Welland Canal and founded the Yates Polytechnic Institute in 1825. He was judge of Madison County, (1835-36), elected a member of the New State Assembly in 1836 and served until his death at age 52 in Chittenango, New York.
