Reindl Springs closes shop after 178 years in business

MANSFIELD - A Mansfield company that has been in the Reindl family for six generations closed in late November. It is believed to have been the city's oldest operating business, said Kristi Reindl this week.

Reindl Spring Service, 250 Park Avenue East, was started in Crestline in 1841 by Lorenz Reindl, she said. He was her great-great-great grandfather.

"He started the business by doing horseshoeing and wagon building. The business was then run by his son (my great-great grandfather) John Reindl. John's son, Charlie (my great-grandfather), moved the business to Mansfield and was then known as Reindl and Hissong. Charlie built the building that is at 250 Park Ave East and opened as Reindl Spring Service, Inc. in 1948," Kristi Reindl said.

"My grandfather (Jim) and my dad (Joe) ran the business until Jim's death in 1993. When my brother, also Joe, graduated from high school in 2000, he and our dad ran the business until my dad passed away in 2013. My brother, Joe has run the business until August of this year when he found work outside of being a mechanic," she said.

Initially, Lorenz Reindl made wagons that were pulled by horse.

"When my brother closed the business, he was doing front-end alignments, suspension parts and leaf springs, mostly on pickup trucks, dump trucks and big plow trucks. He would make springs if needed for larger jobs," Kristi Reindl said.

"The company has been in the family for six generations, and had to be closed because business fell off completely, unfortunately. My brother does have three boys, ages 12, 8 and 4, who would have probably taken over for him," she said.

Kristi Reindl said the business had a total of five locations, including four in Mansfield and the initial Crestline building.

Bob Blanton, the owner of B&B Auto Repair Inc., 262 Park Avenue East, recently purchased the Reindl Springs building and parking lot next door to his business.
