Joseph Johnston, along with his brother, George Bell Johnston and family; sister, Sarah (Johnston) Moore and family; and mother Catherine (Bell) Johnston came with the group from Tennessee in 1842 to the Territory of Iowa written about by nephew, David Woods Moore.

Joseph married his cousin, Sarah Bell Henderson, on 24 March 1845 in Louisa County, Iowa. They had four children: Sarah Catherine Johnston (27 September 1846 - 04 July 1866), Margaret Armina Johnston (- 20 September 1849, age 1 year, 7 months, 11 days), R. C. Johnston and William A. Johnston.

Sarah B. (Henderson) Johnston died 19 May 1859, age 38.

Joseph married for a second time on 09 April 1861 to Lucinda Adeline Orr. They had no children but adopted Anna Martha Cissle/Cecil. She was the orphaned daughter of William Cecil & Mary A. Edmondson.

Last Will and Testament of Joseph Johnston

In the name of God. Amen.

I Joseph Johnston of the township of Columbus City of Louisa and state of Iowa, aged 64 years, being of sound mind, memory and understanding, thanks be to Almighty God for the same. Considering the uncertainty of life, the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof do therefor make, ordain, publish and declare this to be my last will and testament, hereby revoking and making null and void all former wills. That is to say after all my lawful debts are paid and discharged the residue of my estate real and personal, I give bequeath and dispose of as follows.

First. I direct that all of my real estate situated in the county of Louisa and state of Iowa, being sixty (60) acres in the South East quarter (1/4) of sections Number Twenty Six (26) and the South East quarter (1/4) of Sections Number Twenty Three (23) all in Township No. 75, Range No. 5 West, be sold at a sum not less than the appraised value per acre equivalent to cash, and any other Real Estate that I may have a legal right thereto at the time of my death to be sold at it's cash value.

Second. I further direct that all my personal property except the household and kitchen furniture be sold at public sale, that all monies due and owing be collected without any unnecessary delay.

Third. To my beloved wife Lucinda A. Johnston I will and bequeath to her the sum of Twenty five hundred (2500) dollars, and request her to appropriate at her death the sum of Five hundred (500) dollars to Anna Martha Cissle, aged now about Ten (10) years and under my control.

Fourth. I further bequeath to said Anna Martha Cissle payable out of my estate the sum of Five hundred (500) Dollars, the interest to be used for her support and the principal to be paid to her at the age of eighteen (18) years. In the event of her death before she arrives at the age of eighteen (18) years all the legalies allowed by this instrument of writing to revert to my estate.

Fifth. To my brother George B Johnston I bequeath the sum of Eight Hundred (800) Dollars.

Sixth. To the legal representatives of my deceased sister Sarah Moore I bequeath the sum of Eight hundred (800) Dollars.

Seventh. To my sister Margaret G. Duncan wife of James K. Duncan I bequeath the sum of Six hundred (600) Dollars.

Eighth To the congregation of the United Presbyterian Church of Columbus City, Iowa, the interest of the sum of Three hundred (300) dollars the principal to remain in the hands of my beloved wife Lucinda A. Johnston during her life time and at her death to be paid to the trustees of said church for the disposal of by the congregation as a majority of the members of the church shall deem advisable.

Ninth. I further will and bequeath to my wife Lucinda A. Johnston all of my household and kitchen furniture with the exception of one bed and bedding for Anna Martha Cissle, and I further request and direct that the allowance made to my beloved wife by this will, that any portions of that may be left of said legacy at her death I direct to be paid to the trustees of the Home Missions Board of the United Presbyterian Church.

Tenth. In the event of the increase of the value of my property I direct my legalities to receive their portions of the same in proportion to the amount hereby awarded by this instrument of writing and in the event of a diminish in the present value of my property I direct that each shall loose their proportionate loss.

Eleventh. I hereby constitute and appoint Andrew J. Duncan, and Francis J. Moore, the Executors of this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the first day of September A.D. 1877.
