Physician. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and immigrated to Staunton, Virginia in 1787. He was a Justice of the Peace of Augusta County and President of the Board of Trustees of Staunton Academy. His reputation as a physician attracted medical students and among those he taught were William Wardlaw, James McPheeters, Andrew Kean, Samuel Brown, Ephraim McDowell and William Henry Harrison. William Henry Harrison joined the military and became President of the United States.
