Mary Ellen is the second of six children born to Granville Calvin Smith and Carrie Jane Turner of Plain Dealing, Louisiana. Walter was her older brother and her younger siblings were: Bertha (named Rosa Belle at birth), Granville, Jr., Orgia Lee, and George Humphrey.

She was raised and attended school in Tullahassee, Oklahoma.

On February 18, 1920, Mary Ellen Smith married George Flemmons (mispelled Flemmings on the marriage license) in Muskogee, Oklahoma by W. G. Miller, Justice of the Peace, in the presence of Fletcher Gaines and George Brown of Tullahassee, Oklahoma. They became the parents of ten children.

Mary was only 41 years old when she died in Tullahassee, Oklahoma and her granddaughter Barbara Robinson writes the following in the Flemmons Family Reunion 2004 book:

"At the time of her death, her children ranged from the ages of 2 months to 23 years old. Due to the wide range of their ages, some had loving memories to cherish while others had little or no memories of their mother at all. All were greatly affected by the loss of Mary Ellen Smith, especially her husband and children who loved her dearly."

Her funeral was held on June 6, 1943, and she is buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Tullahassee, Oklahoma.
