He was born a slave, was sold at auction before the Civil War for 1400 dollars, was a servant in New Orleans at the Veranda Hotel on Charles St., also at the St Charles Hotel, was owned by David M. Hildreth.

On 1 Oct 1863 in Lynn, MA, he married Caroline Mary E. (Morris) Jefffers, 27, of England (sic), daughter of James and Lavinia Morris, in a first marriage for him and the second for her.

Civil War Veteran - He enlisted 23 Dec1863 at Lynn, MA, in Co. F, 54th. Mass. Inf. He was discharged 12 Aug 1865 at Charleston, S.C.
He was a member of General Frederick Lander G. A. R. Post #5, Lynn, MA.
