Marilyn was born April 7, 1935, at home near the town of Onaga, Kansas to Emile F. Cass and Waunita A. (Perrussel) Cass during a dust storm. She attended the Pleasant Valley country school and Onaga grade school. She was valedictorian of her 1953 class at Onaga High School.
On April 12, 1953, she and Richard Bryce Coulter were married at the Onaga Congregational Church. They met while he was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas during the Korean War. They lived in and outside Rifle, Colorado for fifteen years where their three children, Bryce, Brenda, and Bonnie were born. The family moved to Moscow in August of 1967. Marilyn and Richard were divorced in 1969.
Marilyn and the children remained in Moscow where she was employed as a deputy clerk with the Latah County Assessors staff at the courthouse for 10 years.
On November 21, 1975, Marilyn married Eugene A. Osterberg and moved to a home between Troy and Deary, and later to a new home on Anderson Road in the Avon area. They raised his son, Kevin, there until adulthood. Gene died on September 5, 2000. Marilyn has continued to live on the homestead since.
Over the years, Marilyn has been active in many organizations including The American Legion Auxiliary, Boy Scout Den Mother, a Girl Scout Leader, The Eagles Auxilary, Deary Election Board, Spud Hill Seniors, Adventist Community Services Volunteer, The Busy Bees, a Hospice volunteer, and a member and deacon of the Bovill Presbyterian Church.
Marilyn had a heart of gold and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. She treasured her many friends and especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at 10:30 AM at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Murray Stanton will officiate and burial will be at the Dry Creek Cemetery. A reception and luncheon will follow at the Deary Community Center.
Viewing will be at Short's Funeral Chapel on Sunday from 1:00 to 8:00 PM and on Monday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
The family suggests that memorials be made to the Deary Ambulance Fund, Bovill Presbyterian Church, or to Hospice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Short's Funeral Chapel and online condolences may be sent to www.shortsfuneralchapel.net.
