"Our Cherished Example"

After granting this world nearly a century of his loving and strong example, Don Allred, 97, found eternal peace on September 27, 2011. He was surrounded by his family, that truly treasured and respected him.

Don has rejoined his beloved wife, Jessie Allred, his parents, Louis and Lydia Allred, 13 brothers and sisters, and his three daughters, Rosalie Allred, Joan Neron, and Joyce Saderup.

Survived by his remaining children and their spouses, Maurine (Gerald) Murphy, Clyda (Leif) Brattos, Kay (Julie) Allred, Norman (Sherrie) Allred, and Brent (Nancy) Allred. Don was the head of a family, which in total, comprised of over 100 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.

Don was born in Talmage, Utah on July 7, 1914. On August 8, 1941 in Park City, Utah, he married the love of his life, Jessie Young; this marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Being a son of the Great Depression, Don exemplified the definition of hard work. As a young man, he was a sheepherder and farmer on his family's ranch. As a new father, he supported his family dueling as both a miner and a farmer in Neola, Utah. Later, in the mid 50s, he worked as a plasterer and a chief custodian for the LDS Church in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Don also believed in the strength of service, and was very active in the LDS church. He served as a Stake Missionary, a member of the Sunday School Presidency, as well as an Elder's Quorum President among other church callings. He was a committed Boy Scout Master and a faithful Home Teacher.

Don was the example of leadership in our family. He ensured he was an active part of all of our lives. Never was he absent for a birthday, baptism, graduation, wedding, or any other life event. Don always showed he truly cared. Every member of his family can point to a door hung, a shingle nailed, or a wall plastered that was done by Don. Frequently he stood shoulder to shoulder working on projects with grandchildren four times less his age - often outworking them. He always bore a simple smile and laugh so infectious; no one could resist its tender charm.

Many of us hold the memory of him pacing up and down a warm hallway, holding one of his children/grandchildren closely, while gently singing "I Am a Child of God," as one of our most precious moments. Don was our family's leader... he was our most cherished example.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 30, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Garden Heights Ward, 2220 East Fisher Lane (2935 S). Friends may visit with the family Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church Friday morning from 9:30 to 10:40 a.m. prior to the service. Interment: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
