Joseph Hartley lived in Glen Iron and was raised to man-hood by Richard V.B.Lincoln. He fought in the Civil War from 1861 to June, l865, having attained the rank of Sgt. He served with Co.E, 53rd. Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and in June 1864, was captured in Petersburg, Va. He survived Andersonville prison for 8 1/2 months. Upon returning home, he had to be nourished back to health. In 1867, he married Ellen C Boop and fathered 12 children. They are as follows; Jerome,Levi,William,Sarah,Adam,Isaiah,John,Anna,Rufus, Mark,Clarence, and Elsie. His wife Ellen preceded him in death in May,1903.
His funeral services were held in the Evangelical Church at Glen Iron, conducted by the Rev. Warburton of Millmont, Pa. With many of his comrades of the Civil War in attendance, interment was made in the Long Lane Cemetery near Laurelton, Pa.
