2nd Lt Johnson was a P-38 fighter pilot during World War 2. He was a member of the 9th Squadron (The Knights), 46th Fighter Group, 5th Air Force.

During an attack on the Japanese stronghold at Rabaul, Johnson was last seen diving out of the fight with four Japanese Zeroes on his tail.

Johnson, nor his aircraft, were seen again.

Johnson was the wingman for Medal of Honor recipient Dick Bong and a good friend of ace Gerald Johnson.

Before the war, Johnson worked in a bank.
