Co D 32nd OVI (Pifher genealogy)
died at Battle of Vicksburg
Michael Pifher's army death record says that he died on June 20, 1863 not the 16th. The other date comes from a book that, I believe, collected oral information from his surviving brothers. They probably just remembered the date wrong. Also, he may not actually be buried at Vicksburg. I never found a record for his burial in the cemetery there, and I have heard tell of other soldiers who died during the siege (within a week of Michael's own death) whose remains were actually sent home for burial. Of course, I also know of no record that shows he was buried in Crawford County either. If his grave is in Ohio, it would be in St. Bernard's Cemetery in New Washington, since that is the parish the Pifhers belonged to in the 1860s. If he is at Vicksburg, his grave must either be unmarked or an unknown. (source: Noah Graf, a Pifher researcher)
