Mrs. Martha Harriet Spence was born on 19 June 1833 in Warren county,Ohio and died on 4 February 1907 at her home six and one half miles northeast of Assumption.

She was married to William C.Spence in November 1853. Two children were born to them, Edwin G.Spence and Sallie B.Spence, the latter dying some twelve years ago, leaving one daughter.

The deceased leaves to mourn her departure, her son and his wife, four grandchildren, two brothers, Fred P. Snell of Moweaqua and Daniel B. Snell of Kansas, also three sisters, Miss Sarah Snell and Mrs. Mary Prall of Kansas and Mrs. Euphenia Armstrong of Assumption.

She became a member of the M. E. church when about fourteen years of age and lived a devoted member of that organization until she joined the Bethany Presbyterian church of which her husband was a member. She was an earnest Christian, a devoted wife and mother and a good neighbor.

Her husband preceded her to the better world ten years ago.
Funeral services were held at the Bethany church on Tuesday afternoon at 2 oclock. Rev. Love officiating. Interment was at the cemetery nearby.
