Our loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, Augustus Finlinson Faust, passed away July 20, 2003 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Gus was born July 5, 1918 in Delta, Utah to George A. and Amy Finlinson Faust. He married Afton McKean, on April 30, 1941 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
He graduated from Granite High School, and received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Utah in Comparative Education.
He served in World War II in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy in the U.S.A. North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He later joined the U.S. Naval Reserve. He commanded Utah Surface Division 12-53, Surface Battalion 12-13 and Naval Reserve Officers School 12-5. He retired with the rank of Navy Captain.
He was a professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Utah for 39 years. His research and educational assignments took him to many nations in South America, Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. He was fluent in many languages.
As an active member of the LDS Church, he served a mission in Brazil. He served in many different capacities at ward, stake, and general church levels including: teaching, bishop, high council, Adult Correlation Committee, and as chairman of the Adult Instructional Development Committee of the Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Afton; daughters, Martha Smith,
Tina (Todd Dustman), Chelsea Faust; 10 grandchildren; brothers, President James E. Faust and Daniel Faust. Preceded in death by his parents, George and Amy Faust; son Philip; one grandchild; brothers Rex and Delano Faust.
Funeral services (were) held on Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at 12:00 Noon at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 So. 2300 East, where friends (called) Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday morning from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment: Murray City Cemetery.
