She was born to Rollie S. and Elizabeth Alice (Spillman) Trimmell on December 28, 1912, on a farm northeast of Fredonia. Mary Alice grew up in Coyville, Kansas, attended grade school and high school there and graduated in 1934.
She immediately began teaching in Hartford, Kansas, then in Farmington, Kansas and in North Clark, Kansas. She ended her teaching career of 42 years in the Lincoln, Mound, and Paulen elementary schools in Fredonia. She earned her B.S. in 1961 and M.S. in 1975 at Pittsburg State University.
On May 22, 1936, in Buffalo, Kansas, she married Ralph M. Bateman. He preceded her in death December 9, 1991.
