"John J. Winn, 69 years old, letter carrier here for 26 years, died Monday at Veterans hospital after a four month illness. His home was at Birchwood on White Bear Lake.
Born in New York City, Mr. Winn went with his parents to South Dakota where he grew up on his father's ranch near Deadwood. He came to St. Paul in 1894.
At the outbreak of the Spanish-American war, Mr. Winn enlisted and served in Cuba. Returning to St. Paul in 1901, he entered the postal service where he remained until his retirement in 1927.
Since then he had devoted much of his time to his hobby of gardening at his Birchwood home.
Mr. Winn was a member of Worth Bagley camp, United Spanish War Veterans, and the Social Club of Retired Letter Carriers.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Dora [Johnston] Winn; two daughters, Mrs. George [Nellie] Hughes and Mrs. Fred [Kathryn] Cullifer of St. Paul, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the O'Halloran & Murphy chapel, 215 West Sixth street. Burial will be at Forest cemetery."
