Susan was the sixth of eleven children of Susan Peironnet and Henry Miller Pierce. She was married in Waterville, Maine on 24 May 1848 to Samuel David Thurston. (Their marriage took place one year after Susan's sister, Jane Pierce, married Samuel’s brother, Richard Thurston.) Susan and Samuel's only child was George Pierce Thurston [1849 - 1931]. Susan died 23 Apr 1851 at the age of 21 when George was just two years old. Samuel was married two years later to Jane Marie Sparhawk, with whom he had three more children.
