Thomas Lee Abplanalp, age 86, passed away Sept. 15, 2011, at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home in Ogden after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
He was born March 15, 1925, to John and Clara Abplanalp in Vernal. Tom lived in Vernal his entire life, where he enjoyed the outdoors. Tom had many talents. There was nothing he couldn't build or fix. He was very giving and compassionate to all those who were around him and needed help. Many in the community have been touched by Tom's quiet service. He was always helping the elderly with home repairs. He was known to help neighborhood widows shovel their snow. He even (usually anonymously) helped less fortunate families with groceries and Christmas gifts for their young children.
He served in the U. S. Navy on the USS Kenneth Whiting during World War II. Upon returning home, he worked on oil rigs and later went to work for Christensen Diamond Products as district manager for over 30 years until retirement.
He became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on March 25, 1990.
Tom had two children (twins) with his first wife, Ora LaRee Wooley. He was married to his current wife, Janet Hatch of Vernal for 44 years.
Tom is survived by his wife, Janet, his brother Jay (Eueluce) Salt Lake City, his son Dean (Connie), Orlando, Florida; daughter Doreen Crocket, Fannington, New Mexico; step sons Merlyn (DaShel) Watkins, Orem; Kevin (Mary Beth) Millecam, Lindon; and Marc (Kaleen) Millecam Vernal; 18 grand children, 29 great grand children, and two great-great grand children.
He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: Ferrell, Harold, Theron, John; sister Hazel Crites; brother in-law Danny Crites, and great grandson Sgt. Daniel Gurr.
Funeral services were held Sept. 20 at the Ashley 2nd Ward Chapel. Interment was in the Vernal Memorial Park with military honors under the direction of Blackburn Vernal Mortuary.
