U.S. Congressman, U.S. Army Major General. Born in Shooter's Hill, Virginia, he was commissioned a justice of the peace in 1773 and served as a Captain in Dunmore's war against the Indians in 1774. During the Revolutionary War, he was commissioned Colonel by the Council of Safety of Virginia, in command of the Commissary of Prisoners. Promoted Brigadier General, by Governor James Monroe, Governor in 1811, he served in the War of 1812. After the war, he was commissioned Major General of the 3rd Division Virginia State Troops, US Army and retained the position until his death. After the war, he was a farmer, a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates (1779-83) and served in the Virginia State Senate, (1791-94). In 1801, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventh Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1815. After his term, he resumed agricultural pursuits until his death at age 85 in Rockville, Rockville.
