She was known as Elizabeth and was baptized as Charlotta Margaretha Elizabeth Pieper in Germany. She immigrated to the US in September of 1847 when she was age nine. After a stay in Wisconsin, the family settled in Dorchester, Allamakee County, Iowa. She grew up in the Dorchester area and married the son of another immigrant family, the son of Theodore and Christine Schwarzhoff, in 1862. They spent most of their early married life in Highlandville, a town in the county just west of Allamakee County where her husband operated a brewery, one the the Schwarzhoff family businesses. Their only two children, Joseph and Josephine, were born in Highlandville. Her husband's business ventures led to a move to Codington County. South Dakota, were he invested in farmland. Sometime around 1880, they left the son in charge of the South Dakota land and moved back to Bee, Iowa, a village on the Minnesota/Iowa border a short distance north of Dorchester. Joseph owned a general store in Bee, was its postmaster, ran a flour mill, and operated a brewery In the mid 1890s, for some unknown reason, Elizabeth left Joseph and moved to Crooked Creek, Minnesota, where she operated a borading house. Her daughter, Josephine, probably went with her. Her son Joseph and family seem to have also moved back from South Dakota around this same time.
By 1910, Elizabeth, Joseph, and Josephine had established separate homes in Trempeleau County, Wisconsin. At one time Elizabeth was a housekeeper for the priest at the Catholic church in Ettrick, Wisconsin. During her last years she lived with her daughter and her family outside of Galesville, Wisconsin.
