Jonas Ervin Loucks, a highly respected farmer of this community, who lives 3 1/2 miles west of town, was killed early Saturday morning enroute to the market at South Bend, when his automobile stalled on the Ironwood Drive grade crossing, south of Playland Park and was struck by a New York Central railroad freight train.

Riding in the automobile with Mr Loucks was his daughter, Mrs Ivo Lienhart of Elkhart, and a step-daughter of Mr Loucks' son, Eldon, Miss Marian Verheye, 17, of near Wakarusa. The two ladies who were accompanying him to market, jumped from the car a few seconds before the crash, but were helpless to assist Mr Loucks to safety.

Miss Verheye told the South Bend police that they were going north on the Ironwood Drive, and had stopped at the railroad crossing to wait for an eastbound train to pass, then proceeded to cross the tracks and the car driven by Mr Loucks stalled directly in the path of the westbound train.

The car, a 1935 Ford, was dragged some 1,000 feet by the train and demolished.

The train's engineer, C V Sianborger of Elkhart, reported that the freight was moving westbound at about 48 miles at the time of the impact.

For years Mr. Loucks had traveled the same road going to the South Bend market each Saturday with farm produce.

Jonas Ervin Loucks was born west of Wakarusa October 12, 1875, the son of Jacob and Catherine (Freed) Loucks, and spent his entire life west of Wakarusa.

On July 6, 1895, he was married to Susannah Herrington, who passed away August 12, 1944.

He leaves to mourn his loss, four sons and three daughters. Amos Loucks and Mrs Ivo Lienhart of near Elkhart, Eldon Loucks of near home, Chester Loucks of Hagerman, Idaho, Wilbur Loucks of Kimberly, Idaho, Mrs Lawrence Rouch of Lakeville and Mable at home.

A son, Ervin J died in infancy.

He also reared Marjorie (Kline) Madlem of South Bend.

Other survivors are 17 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, 4 step-grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mrs Anna Shantz of Canada and Mrs Mary Dils of Goshen.

He was a kind and devoted father, his interests were always for his home and children. He will be greatly missed in his home and community.

The son Wilbur of Idaho, visited here two weeks ago, and the Rouch family were visiting in Idaho at the time of Mr Louck's death. They all returned for the funeral.

The body was taken to the Loucks home from the Lienhart funeral parlors Sunday evening, and funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, a service at the home at 1:30 preceding a service at he Olive church at 2:30 with Rev Silas Weldy officiating. Burial in the adjoining cemetery.
