Enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp in 1941. Attended sea school at Norfolk. Served aboard the USS Washington with the 7th Marine Detachment. Saw action in eight major naval engagements in the Pacific. Awarded a Silver Star, three Bronze Stars, EAME, Asiatic-Pacific, American Defense, Good Conduct and World War II Victory Medal.

Son of John J. Mitchell and Jessie M. Young.
