Obituary 21 Feb 1878 St Joe Valley Register- Mrs Lewis Gillis passed to her final rest on Saturday morning at 4 o'clock. Mrs Lewis Gillis wife of Lewis Gillis, of German township, of tubercolosis of the left lung, and a complication of diseases. She was born in this county August 1854, and was therefore but little past 23 years of age. She is the daughter of Mr. Henry Smith, of that township. Her death was not unexpected, but was none the less severely felt by a large number of relatives and friends by whom she was held in very warmest of affection and love. As a wife and mother,she was tender and true to her father and mother she was tenderly devoted and to her friends and neighbors she was kind, obliging and sympathetic, having their warmest regard and respect. She leaves two small children the youngest but five months old, and a husband to mourn her death. The funeral took place on Sunday last, from Portage Chapel, Elder Chafee officiating and was one of the largest ever held in the township. Ella married Lewis Gillis 1 Oct 1874.
