Edward Bates, born in West Virginia, became an accomplished photographer of the post-Civil War period in the West. Particularly noteworthy are his photographs, especially his portraits, of Plains Indians.

Bates established a studio in Lawton, Oklahoma. Nearby Fort Sill became a center for Plains Indians who had either been resettled near the Fort or captured and incarcerated there during the Indian wars of the latter part of the 19th century. Bates had ample opportunity to observe and photograph these native Americans. His studio was located at 423-425 D Avenue in Lawton.

Bates was first married at the age of 26. In his second marriage, in 1915, Bates wed Lenora ("Nora") Belle Gillock, who was born in Texas and worked in his studio in Lawton, Okla. After Bates' death, Nora ran the studio for three decades.
