OBITUARY :
WILBERT D. "SMITTY" SMITH, 88, of Chambersburg, Pa., died at Clarice C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa, on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011.
Born May 12, 1923, in Lantz, Md., he was one of eight siblings born to Della Mae and Isaiah Smith. Smitty was married to Dorothy Lou Smith on Oct. 20, 1963, and they celebrated 46 years together before she passed away in July 2008.
Smitty is survived by his daughter, Sandra of Davenport, Iowa; granddaughter, Lori (Steve) Elvert of Dixon, Iowa; and grandsons, Robert and John Reed of Davenport. He also has two great-grandchildren, Grace Elvert and Reed Elvert, also of Dixon, Iowa. In addition, he is survived by his stepson, Dennis (Marylou) Rolls of Plumville, Pa.
Smitty served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific and continued that career by serving with the Maryland National Guard for 22 years as first sergeant of the unit. He was the store manager of Tristate Electrical Supply Co. and helped the store evolve from the location on Lincoln Way West to the current location on Commerce Street in Chambersburg before he retired after 42 years of service. Smitty also worked part-time at the Greyhound bus station in Chambersburg after his retirement from Tristate until the local station closed.
He was a member of the Chambersburg Rod and Gun Club, the VFW, and the American Legion. He was a member of the 729th Division Retirement Association and served in a variety of capacities over the years.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents, one son, Brian; two stepsons, John and Gregory; his sisters, Hazel and Marie; and brothers, Fred, John, Leon, Raymond and Floyd.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, with the Revs. Dr. Neil O. Hively and Tara Magoon officiating. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. Refreshments and fellowship will follow interment at Trinity Lutheran Church, Chambersburg. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, 2011, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to assist families of seriously ill or injured patients at the Air Force's Wilford Hall Medical Center may be directed to the Fisher House, 7323 W, U.S. Highway 90, Suite 107, San Antonio, TX 78227.
