OBITUARY :
JOHN W. SMITH, 66, of Leitersburg, Hagerstown R.D. 5, died at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday in the Waynesboro Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past two years and was critically ill since being admitted to the hospital Sunday.

He was born at Lantz, April 22, 1914, son of the late Isaiah J. and Della Mae (Swope) Smith. His early life was lived at Lantz, and following their marriage in August, 1939, he and Mrs. Smith made their home at Highfield. They moved to Leitersburg 31 years ago.

As a young man, Mr. Smith served with the Civilian Conservation Corps.

He was employed by Hall's Motor Transit Co., Hagerstown, for 41 years. For a number of years he was a driver for the company, and prior to his retirement in 1976, worked as a mechanic.

He was a Protestant.

Mr. Smith was a life member of the Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Co. and for 10 years had served as fire chief. He was also a member of Teamsters Local 991, Hagerstown.

In addition to his wife, Mrs. Vivian L. (Kibler) Smith, he is survived by a son, Donald W. Smith, Waynesboro, six brothers and a sister: Frederick Smith and Raymond Smith, both of Waynesboro; Leon Smith, Highfield, Wilbert Smith, Chambersburg; James Smith, Huntington, Ala., Floyd Smith, Lancaster, and Mrs. Marie Gaver, Cascade.

The funeral wll be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Grove Funeral Home in charge of Pastor Donald Warrenfeltz. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 8p.m. Friday.
