MARYVILLE, Tenn., April 20- Lillie Ladd Mauser, grandmother of the Senate majority leader, Howard H. Baker Jr., and the first woman to be elected sheriff in Tennessee, died early today at Blount Memorial Hospital. She was 101 years old and lived in Maryville.
Born July 11, 1879, she gained the nickname Mother Ladd as the first housemother of the Lambda Chi Fraternity at the University of Tennessee. She made national headlines when she recaptured four of five prisoners who escaped from the Roane County jail after they shot and wounded the sheriff, Chris Ladd, who was her first husband.
Mrs. Mauser was later elected sheriff by the county court, but she served only three months. Mrs. Mauser was the mother of Dora Ladd, who married Howard Henry Baker, the Senator's father.
