23rd Michigan infantry, Co. I, age 28, from Houghton, Michigan. Enlisted July 21, 1862; mustered out of service June 28, 1865.

He died at age 70 in Munising Township and was survived by his wife of 39 years, Mary Anna "Annie" (Dilger) Gogarn, married on August 4, 1865; sons, Julius W. (Josephine) Gogarn of Seattle, WA; John Robert (Alice) Gogarn of Fort Worth, TX; Charles Albert (Dora) Gogarn, Anthony Nicholas (Lizzie Powell) Gogarn, and Robert Paul (Harriet) Gogarn; daughters Miss Anna "Annie" Mary Gogarn and Miss Justina Gogarn (who married Ezra Joseph Boucha).

Julius had been a resident of Munising for 32 years, moving to East Munising in 1872 from Houghton, MI. Born on the River Rhine in Prussia. Son of William Gogarn, who emigrated to the US in Nov 1853.
