Dedicated farmer was decorated WWII veteran

Glenn H. Johnston, 90, of Waynesburg, was born January 20, 1921, and died at 4:32 a.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2011, in his home, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was a son of the late Harrison Morton Johnston and Mary Alberta Breese Johnston.

Mr. Johnston was born at home in Center Township, Greene County.

He graduated in 1938 from Center Township High School, where he received a letter in football.

On June 10, 1942, he married the love of his life, Lorraine Headley, who survives at his parent's home. They celebrated 69 years of marriage.

He was a full-time dairyman until 1995 and then a beef farmer. He was very dedicated to his farm and continued farming until one month prior to his death.

Mr. Johnston was president of the Greene County Artificial Breeders' Cooperative from 1960 to 1962.

He loved the Lord and was a charter member and treasurer of Faith Baptist Church, Independent in Lippincott. He served as church treasurer for more than 60 years. He was also a former Sunday school teacher.

Mr. Johnston was a veteran, having served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Forces and in England in the 8th Army Air Force.

He participated in the battles and campaigns of Air Offensive Europe.

He was a prisoner of war for 151⁄2 months, from January 24, 1944, to May 8, 1945, in Germany's Stalag Luft 4. He was shot down over Belgium on his sixth mission flying from England. He received the Purple Heart for a wound received in action January 24, 1944, over Brussels, Belgium, the American Campaign Medal, Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 1 bronze battle star, Air Medal, Prisoner of War Medal and Army Air Force Aircrew Member Badge.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, Lorraine, are three children, Patricia L. (Jerry) Rhodes of Augusta, Ga., William H. Johnston of Clarksville and Sharon Johnston of Waynesburg; a previous daughter-in-law, Cheryl (David) Piroch of Marianna; seven grandchildren, Sheri (Scott) Glass and Lori (Harry) Denby of Jacksonville, Fla., Tracy (Jeff) Elliott of Farmington, W.Va., Kelly (John) Wolfe of Mather, Aaron (Angie) Johnston of West Newton, Mark Johnston Piroch of Clark Summit and Glenn Johnston Piroch of Dry Tavern; 15 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandson; two sisters, Frances J. Crawford of Waynesburg and Wilma Eileen (George) Riess of Carmichaels; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are two sons, Glenn Johnston Jr. and Douglas Johnston; a daughter-in-law, Leandra Baniecki Johnston; a sister, Dorothy Johnston; and five brothers, Carl I. Johnston, Charles W. Johnston and three who died in infancy, George, Harrison Jr. and Clarence.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home Inc., Daryl L. Throckmorton, owner/director, 197 North Maiden Street, Waynesburg, PA 15370. There will be additional visitation from 10 to 11 a.m., the hour of service, Friday, September 16, in Faith Baptist Church in Lippincott with the Rev. Paul Roofner officiating. Burial will be in Greene County Memorial Park, Morgan Township, Greene County.
