Edward Macklin was the son of James and Eliza McKane Macklin, both immigrants from Ireland. He had a twin brother Robert. Edward had an interesting period of adventure in his twenties when he ventured from upstate NY to the "west". Family lore says he left home in disgust when his father sold his favorite colt which had been promised to him and pocketed the $60. Edward told his younger sister Emma, "You will be a big girl before you see me again!" He decided to head west to visit his Uncle Robert Macklin in Waterman, Illinois.
However, he found work on a variety of Mississippi ferry boats, eventually becoming a Pilot. He also honed his card and dice playing abilities onboard. One story has Edward pointing a gun at the riverboat captain when the boat had caught fire and started to sink. The captain had ordered the vessel to stop, but Edward forced the captain to signal full-steam so the vessel would beach on a shoal, where the passengers could escape.
There is also a story that he married a well-off girl of "Catholic Spanish descent" and had a daughter. Supposedly this daughter visited her NY half-sister, Maude Calhoun. Edward denied this earlier marriage - as his NY wife, Jane Lant (1854-1908) had patiently waited 12 years for his return. (These stories and more are in an unpublished Macklin Family History. Truth unknown?) Writer is Edward's Great Grand Niece.

Edward and Jane married in NY in 1879. Edward became a carpenter, and trained fine horses. He is listed in the 1888 Directory of Breeders and Owners of Trotters in the United States and Canada. His children remembered him with great affection.
