Margaret Macklin McClellan (1836-1898) was the daughter of James Macklin and Margaret Thompson, all born in Ireland. She was the second of four daughters. Margaret immigrated with her parents to upstate New York when she was young, before 1838, when her younger sister Eliza was born in Washington County, NY. Her mother died shortly after, 1839 or 1840. Her father James, returned to Ireland to marry Eliza McKane, with whom he had nine additional children in New York.

By the 1850 US Census, 14 year old Margaret is not listed living with her father's family. She and her sister Sarah appear to be living with her future in-laws the McClellan family in Hebron, NY.
There is a story from the Macklin family history in Washington County, that older sister Mary Jane Macklin (1831-1908) came to New York from Ireland in 1850. When Mary Jane asked to see her mother's grave, her father could not remember the location. Mary Jane and her sisters were much displeased with this callousness and they and their families had little to do with their father James thereafter.

The History of Somanauk United Presbyterian Church states that Margaret Macklin moved with Jemima Hoy Cummings from NY to Somonauk, Illinois in 1855. (This relationship is confirmed by the 1855 NY Census, which shows them living together in Hebron, NY.) On Sep. 30, 1856, Margaret married Nelson Samuel McClellan, (also from Washington County, New York) in Cumming's home in Somonauk.

Margaret and Nelson McClellan had nine children:
James Charles McClellan, b. 1859
Margaret "Maggie" McClellan Wilcox 1861 – 1938
Elizabeth "Lizzie" McClellan Wilcox 1864 – 1916
Minnie McClellan Van Ohlen? b. 1867
Mary Jane "Jennie" McClellan Usley? 1869 – 1903
John Russell McClellan b. 1871
Alfred Nelson McClellan b. 1872
Mattie Mae McClellan b. 1876
William Ralph McClellan 1880 – 1941

Margaret Macklin McClellan's obituary states that she was buried, "mid the springing grass and under the budding trees of Oak Mound cemetery, the mortal remains of this much loved woman were consigned to the kindly embrace of mother earth in the hope of a blissful immortality on that other brighter shore".

Samuel and Margaret McClellan are mentioned in The Underground Railroad in DeKalb County, Illinois.

Writer is James & Eliza McKane Macklin's 2nd GGD.
