JOHN R. KESSLER
John R. Kessler, near Dubs' Church, died this morning at 1:10 o'clock from a complication of diseases after an illness of seven months. He was aged 83 years and 23 days.
He was the son of the late John and Lucy Rudisill Kessler and is survived by four sons and a daughter, Harry J. Kessler, Marburg; Maurice P. Kessler, Charles Street; Warren W. Kessler, Fair Avenue; Paul B. Kessler, at home, and Mrs. Theodore Wentz, Leon, Kan.
Two brothers, Jacob Kessler, Astoria, Ill., and Oliver Kessler, Parkville; one sister, Mrs. Samuel Ehrhart, Abbottstown; 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Kessler was a veteran of the Civil War having served with Company A of the 200th Pennsylvania Infantry.
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 9:30 o'clock with brief services at the house and concluding obsequies at St. Paul's (Dubs') Lutheran Church. The Rev. A. M. Hollinger will officiate. Interment will be made in the adjoining cemetery.
John Rudisill Kessler was the husband of Emma Louisa Wollet Kessler. In 1860, he was a laborer living in Manheim Township, York County, and later worked as a carpenter. He stood 5' 8" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.
He was drafted into the army in November 1862 and assigned to the 166th Pa Inf but soon procured a substitute and mustered out. However, he volunteered August 31, 1864, with the 200th Pa Inf, at the rank of private. Although not assigned to a company, he is sometimes referred to as a member of Co. A, so it may be opined that he spent much of his time with that company. Honorably discharged May 30, 1865.
