Story from Donna Hensley (Campbell) daughter of Boots Campbell
Bud owned a grocery store in Weedpatch, California during the dust bowl days. At the end of their workday all the migrant workers came to his store to buy food. John Steinbeck, the author of "The Grapes of Wrath" stood in front of Uncle Bud's story and interviewed the Migrant Workers as they left; he used this information to write his novel. Bud's son Nolan was a manager of several minor league baseball teams. Nolan had his 15 minutes of fame when he became the first manager ejected from a game by a female umpire. That story along with the picture of the female umpire and Nolan kicking a base was shown on TV news stations and in sports magazines all over the country. After Bud retired he drove the bus for the Bakersfield Dodgers which were the farm team for the Los Angeles Dodgers. While there he became acquainted with Future major leaguers Jeff Leonard & Rick Sutcliffe. He told me that Jeff Leonard was always broke back and would constantly be borrowing money from Uncle Bud when they had away games. After Jeff got in the major leagues Bud always said he would love to run into him so he collect all his money and maybe he could borrow some from Jeff. I used to love to go to all the home games with Uncle Bud, not because I was a huge baseball fan, but because he had reserved seats right next to where the bats were kept behind home plate. All the players would come over to talk to Uncle Bud while they were waiting for their turn at bat. What more could a teenage girl ask for!!!

After Mary died Uncle Bud would go to Mulberry, Arkansas every year and stay for a week to clear the weeds away from Mary's grave, polish her headstone and bring her flowers. He did this his entire life until he was unable physically to continue to make the trip.

Our friends. Jess and Nannie Campbell owned Weedpatch and their oldest child, Bud owned a little grocery store and a gas station that had two gasoline pumps. It was called the 'Jot-em-down Store; we would get groceries and gas and Bud would just 'jot it down', and we would pay later. It was the first grocery store I remember being in and to top it off, it is where Ed bought me my first ice -cream cone.
