John Michial Handshy was the oldest son of Frederick Handshy born March 15, 1787 in Switzerland, and Catherine Cleckner, who were married in Loudoun County, Virginia.

John Michial married Susan Caroline Brown two days before her eighteenth birthday, Mar. 9, 1848.

Word has been received that Louis D. Mitchell, 95, Of Gerber, Calif., the last member of a Carpenter pioneer family, died Dec 27.
He was the son of the late William Major Mitchell whose second wife was the former Miss Zeluia Handshy of this city.
He is survived by his wife and six children of Gerber, Calif, six brothers, William R., Julius, John, Fred, Alonzo and James Mitchell. Two sisters, Mrs. Annabell Daniel, Mrs. Frances Bahruth, preceded him in death.

John Michial was born in Loudoun Co., Virginia. He came to Illinois in 1833 making the trip across the country in a covered wagon. They settled In Omphghent Township, south of Edwardsville.
John Michial had no opportunity of going to school until he was 21 and then went to a county school.
In June 14, 1846, he enlisted in the 6th Regiment Infantry and went with his Regiment to Mexico. He fought in the Battle of Cerro Gordo, where he was severely wounded. He was discharged May 25, 1847.
When he returned from the Mexican War, he was still walking with a cane. He met Susan Caroline Brown, who was born, March 11, 1831.
Susan Caroline Brown, came with her parents from Tennessee to Logan County, Illinois.
John Michial read law with Abraham Lincoln. He was also a friend of John M. Palmer.
John and Susan made their home in Lincoln, Illinois.
First, he was a farmer, then he engaged in the grain business and also bought and sold hogs.
At one time, he had hogs driven to East St. Louis. The river was so frozen the ferry could not cross. However, the river was frozen hard enough to drive the hogs across, as was sometimes done. The hogs had to be slaughtered in East St. Louis. This was great a loss financially.
Then he became a merchant in Lincoln, Illinois. He went to California, 1849 during the gold rush, then returned home.
Later, he moved to a farm, in Omphgent Township, Madison County, Illinois.
He located in New Hampton, now known as Worden, Illinois. Here he was Justice of the Peace for a number of years and until his death was called "Squire Handshy".
During Cleveland's administration, he was postmaster.
At one time, he preached the Gospel. When he could not attend Church, he always asked the children what the text was when they returned from church.
Sometimes they heard another sermon.

John M. Handshy, a respected resident of Worden, died at his home Tuesday morning at 11,65, of Albermunia, aged 81 years, 4 months and 20 days. The funeral took place from the family residence Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock under auspices of the Stanton Masonic Lodge. Services were conducted by Rev 3. Moser, Pastor of the Christian Church. The remains were laid to rest in the New Hope Cemetery. John M. Handshy was born in Loudoun County, Virginia, May 25, 1814, and came to this country, locating in the Omphghant township. He resided there until the Mexican War broke out, when he enlisted and served until he was wounded near the close for the conflict. His wound was caused by a canister ball and gave him much trouble..

He roomed with Abraham Lincoln, in Springfield and recalled the fact with pleasure. After the war, he settled in Logan County and engaged in farming. Later, he went into the merchandising business and afterwards was a stock and grain dealer.

He was taken with Gold Fever, in 1849 and joined the large army of gold seekers across the plains. His dreams were not realized and he lost what he had when he left. He returned to Madison County, in 1869. He has served since many positions of trust. He was a Post Master of Worden during Cleveland's administration.

In his younger days he preached the word of God, and has always been a constant reader of scripture. He was married to Caroline Brown.

He leaves his wife and five children, to mourn his death. The children are, J. J. Handshy and Mrs. Emma Fitch, of Worden, Mrs. Laura Worden, of Holden, MO., Mrs. Adeline Lorch, of this city and C. F. Handshy, Wabash train dispatcher at Forrest.
He was a good man, a brave soldier and honorable man, in all walks of life and a loyal democrat.

We desire to extend thanks to neighbors, friends and all who in any way assisted during the illness and at the death of our beloved husband and father, J. H. Handshy, Mrs. S. C. Handshy and family.

John Michial Handshy received a pension for his wound, in the Mexican War.

John Michial Handshy was in partnership in the Sparks Flour Mill, with Andrew Jackson Hamel, who built it, in 1869, in Hamel's Corner, Illinois. Now known as Hamel.
Four years later, it went out of business. The area was wheat country, and speculation was the mills, in Edwardsville gave too much competition.
