C. F. Handshy was a Wabash Telegraph operator in Forrest, Illinois, in 1884.

He married Martha Dias on December 31, 1890.

Mr. C. F. Handshy, Assistant Manager of The Illinois Traction System, at Springfield, was elected president of the Illinois Electric Railway Association at its annual meeting held in Chicago, Illinois, January 19. Mr. Handshy began his railway career as a telegraph operator for the
Wabash Railway, in 1884, and is among those successful railroad operators who have worked up through the ranks.

In 1899, he became train dispatcher of the Wabash Railroad and in 1902, was promoted to the position of assistant chief dispatcher at Decator, Illinois. Two years later he succeeded to the position of chief dispatcher, and in 1903, became trainmaster. Leaving the steam road field in 1907, he entered the service of the Illinois Traction System as general superintendent of transportation of the interurban lines of the system. He was appointed general superintendent of interurban lines, in January, 1910, and on June 1, 1913, he was made assistant general manager.

As a result of the collision of a Springfield street car with a Chicago & Alton train last week, Superintendent Handshy of the Illinois Traction Co., has issued orders requiring all cars come to an absolute stop before the conductor goes ahead to flag the car to cross.

Charles Frederick Handshy invented, with W. P. Potter, a ticket box and cutter improvements, especially for use, in connection with railway tickets and transfers. Patented September 9, 1919.
He resided in Springfield, Illinois, County of Sangamon, during this time.

Railroad Man Dies
Decatur., Ill. Nov. 19, 1942-Funeral services will be held here tomorrow for C. F. Handshy, 78, St. Louis, Mo. Former general manager of the Illinois Terminal Railroad of Springfield, who died in Macon County Hospital yesterday after a illness of several months. Burial will be at Dawson. Before coming to work for the ITR in 1908 Handshy was a telegraph operator and then chief dispacher for the Wabash Railroad.
